Folkwang University of the Arts is one of the largest art and design universities in Germany with departments of Music, Theatre, Dance, Design and Research. The university’s design department, located in the city of Essen at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein, will host the artist / designer in residence programme. The programme is part of the Sustainability by Design (SBYD) project funded in the funding line Innovative Hochschule by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Joint Science Conference (GWK).
Sustainability by Design aims to transfer knowledge from sustainability research into society and the economy through design. The project explores the potential of design in contributing to the development of a climate-neutral and resource-light society. It involves various formats such as international symposia, exhibitions, and workshops, revolving around the three core themes of craft, technology and biodesign. Two external research institutes with an expertise in sustainability research are involved in the project as collaborators:
the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy and the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHTResidencies
WE OFFER:
→ scholarship amounting to €1500 per month to cover living expenses (= €9000 in total for the six month residency)
→ free accommodation for the duration of the residency programme (one private single room per resident in a furnished flat shared between the two residents)
→ €1500 material budget, more if necessary, according to reasoned need
→ payment of travel costs to travel to and from Essen, in accordance with the state‘s travel expenses law
→ access to the university’s well-equipped workshops, including:
– Wood, metal, ceramics and plastics workshops (including CNC milling, laser cutting, ceramic 3D printing, etc.)
– Digital design workshops (additive manufacturing, XR technologies, physical computing, etc.)
– Bio Lab (laminar flow workbench, autoclave, microscope with 4K, camera, platform shaker, magnetic stirrer, incubator, dehydrator, etc.)
– Textile workshop (Kniterate digital knitting machine, hand-knitting, machines, CNC embroidery machine, various sewing machines, etc.)
→ exhibition of the work created during the residency as part of a group exhibition at Dutch Design Week 2024 in Eindhoven
(19 – 27 October 2024)
→ exchange with a large project team made up of various design disciplines
→ contacts with sustainability research institutes, especially the Wuppertal Institute and Fraunhofer UMSICHT
→ a campus at the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
REQUIREMENTS:
→ artistic and/or design project proposal on one of the two themes (Bio-based materials or Technology and Sustainability), the result of
which can be exhibited at Dutch Design Week 2024
→ artistic and/or design-related engagement with current societal questions
→ ability to independently develop themes for art and/or design work, to create and to reflect upon the work
→ willingness to conduct most of the work for the residency on the premises of the Folkwang Campus in Essen at the Zollverein World
Heritage Site Campus, Quartier Nord
→ willingness to continuously reflect upon your project’s progress with the SBYD team
→ valid travel documents that allow you to travel to Germany and to apply for a visa for the duration of the scholarship if necessary
