Collide Copenhagen Call for Submission

Collide Copenhagen Call for Submission

Last Deadline: March 4th, 2024

1. Introduction

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, and Copenhagen Contemporary are pleased to announce the second edition of the Collide residency award. Arts at CERN, the Laboratory’s distinguished arts programme, facilitates meaningful exchanges between the realms of art and science. Welcoming artists through various residency and art commission opportunities, Arts at CERN invites them to spend dedicated time within our institution and in dialogue with our community. This unique experience
allows artists to witness firsthand the pursuit of big questions about our universe through particle physics.

Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) is Copenhagen’s international art centre, showing installation art created by established artists and new emerging talents. CC creates collaborative partnerships and organises events with different partners across cultural genres locally and internationally. Collide Copenhagen residency award is the collaboration framework between CERN and Copenhagen Contemporary that aims to support artistic research on art, science, and technology. Within this unique collaboration framework, Collide will be taking place annually over a three-year period (2023-2025).

2. Description of the Call
Collide, an annual residency programme, is a unique opportunity for artists with a distinct interest in the intersection of art, science, and technology. We invite artists with a keen interest in engaging with scientists and engineers to join our vibrant community at CERN in
Geneva and at Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) in Copenhagen. Arts at CERN and Copenhagen Contemporary invite artists to explore the profound impact of science on contemporary culture. The primary goal of Collide is to immerse artists in the dynamic environment of the laboratory, fostering a deep dialogue with CERN’s scientific community. This residency extends beyond geographical boundaries, providing a rich cultural exchange in the context of Copenhagen.

The residency will consist of two months divided into two periods. The artist will spend the first month at CERN in Geneva and the second in Copenhagen. The residency will be dedicated to artistic research and exploration. After the residency, a development phase will follow, during which the artist will define and produce a groundbreaking artwork to be included in an exhibition at CC in 2025, the last year of the collaboration between both institutions. Throughout this journey, artists will receive curatorial support from the Geneva
and Copenhagen curatorial teams.

3. Eligibility and Criteria
Collide welcomes artists from any country who are at least 18 years old. Interested artists are invited to submit one application detailing their project proposal, artistic vision, and relevance to the overarching context of the call. The application should describe a project to
be developed during the residency and an art production proposal. Collide is particularly interested in artists who resonate with the following ideas:
• Cultural Significance: artists interested in exploring the role of advanced technologies and novel scientific models as pivotal themes in society.
• Technological Reflection: artists whose work delves into the profound implications of advanced technologies, with a specific focus on the challenges of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and the emergence of quantum technologies, and their exploration from philosophical and ethical perspectives.
• Dialogue with Science: artists eager to deepen their connection with the field of physics, engaging in meaningful dialogues with scientists, engineers, and staff at both CERN and Copenhagen Contemporary.
• Collaborative Processes: artists who showcase an ability to work collaboratively and flexibly across disciplinary boundaries, enriching creative insights with diverse perspectives.
• Community Engagement: artists interested in immersing themselves in CERN’s and Copenhagen’s vibrant communities, exploring the social fabric, historical narratives, and unique aspects that define their identity.

4. Conditions of the residency

Collide is committed to supporting selected artists or artist collectives by providing the following financial assistance and conditions:
• Living Expenses: comprehensive coverage of living expenses for the entire two-month residency period, encompassing the stay at CERN in Geneva and Copenhagen.
• Travel and Accommodation: Collide will cover travel costs and arrange accommodation within a predefined budget for the duration of the residency at CERN and Copenhagen.
