Surel’s Residency

Surel’s Place believes that artists should be supported at a level commensurate to the value they add to their individual and collective lives.  We aim to give you the time, shelter, and professional support your work deserves.  In exchange, we ask you to offer art experiences to our community.  Boise values artists and their work, and as a resident, you will be valued and appreciated for the energy, ideas, and dedication that you bring to our city.

The program is open to professional visual, literary, and performance artists:  painters, writers, musicians, architects, filmmakers, and choreographers… any artist who needs a place to focus.  However, because of the property’s limitations and proximity to neighbors, this is not a place that can accommodate loud or terribly messy processes, such as welding, drumming, or blacksmithing.

We favor artists whose work is technically advanced, unique, attractive (need not be pretty!), and conceptually valuable.  Work that is predominantly conceptual, that must be explained in order to attract a viewer, may not be met with as much enthusiasm by our jurists.  In addition, because we ask our residents to interact with the public through one workshop and one final event, we welcome artists who desire to connect with an audience in these ways.

DATES: January-May 2022

WHO: Artists 25 years or older. Visual, literary, and performance artists:  painters, writers, musicians, architects, filmmakers, and choreographers.

Arts Unchained Virtual Residency

Wendy.network is announcing another virtual residency for creative individuals of any background and/or mediums! Our main purpose at wendy.network is to find new ways for artists to thrive without having to struggle for survival, by fostering a radically empathetic community of artists and art lovers. This residency is dedicated to the ‘democratization of the arts’, where together with other participants, mentors and wendy.network team members, the residents will strive to create, imagine and work towards projects that can bring the society closer to the democratization of the arts

The current artistic landscape operates with the guidance of a select few. All too often we find an environment of exclusivity and elitism even in those institutions and organizations that seemingly function as ‘progressive’. With this year’s wendy.network’s residency we hope to create a space open to all, that will challenge the current state of the art world and dare to propose new methods of thinking, writing, exhibiting, creating, living, etc. With this call, we call for the diversification and democratization of the contemporary art world and art market so we can all experience an equal and inclusive artistic system!

The residency will include weekly lectures from 4 guest speakers, private sessions with a guest mentor, and workshops, where you will tackle various problems related to the topic and your project. There will also be time to bond and connect to the other participants during the weekly side activities. The main focus will be on developing a personal project that is related to the topic of the democratization of the arts and building a tangible report/article together with the other participants.

Open Call for Proposals- Diversity in the Arts

Diversity enriches us and helps us grow. This is especially important in the arts. In true diversity, perspectives that deviate from the social norm are also heard and included equally. But that doesn’t happen by itself. We see diversity as a precondition for sustainable cohesion, a driver of innovation, and necessary for broad social support for the arts. This is why this latest call under “A Fair New Idea?!” is in search of ideas and proposals that can strengthen diversity within our arts field.
